Whitney Elizabeth Houston was the youngest child of the singer Dionne Warswick, and gospel music legend Cissy Houston. Whitney Elizabeth Houston grew up in a family that was musical. Her first singing gig was in the choir at the church she attended The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark as a young child at the age of 15, she had begun singing backing vocals professionally with the mother of her on Chaka Khan's hit song from 1978 Im Every Woman. Then she went on to perform backing vocals for Jermaine, Lou Rawls, and even her mother. The vocals she sang with the band from New York Material attracted major record labels which included Arista. They signed her with Arista in 1983, where she was a part of the company for the remainder of her career. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut record for an artist in the year. It featured a number of hits like How Will I Know You're Good to Me, Saving All My Love For you and The Most Beautiful Love of All. It was instrumental in her achieving seven US charts-topping singles in a row and beat the Beatles. The album was sold out of three million copies in its first album's first year of release in the US as well as sell 25 million worldwide winning her the first of her six Grammys. Its Whitney 1987 album, with the songs Where Do Broken Hearts and I Wanna Dance With Somebody as popular songs, was a way to build on the success she had achieved. But the 1992 film The Bodyguard sealed her spot in the top 20 most-sellers ever. The film and her part in it were not very appreciated, but the soundtrack and her rendition to Dolly's I Will Always Love You charted for several months in the charts, and she sold nearly 44 million singles and albums all over the world. In 1993, it was also when she got married Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition musician with whom she bore the sole child of her marriage, Bobbi Kristina Brown. At this point that her much documented drug use began and by 1996 she was an everyday user.
